The Holiness of God

"I am the Lord, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King.” Isaiah 43:15

“To whom then will you liken Me,
Or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things...
By the greatness of His might and the strength of His power."
Isaiah 40:25

"Who is like You, glorious in holiness...?" Exodus 15:11

Our fathers trusted in You... and You delivered them."
Psalm 22:3

"I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings.... And one cried to another and said: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!' And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.
     "So I said: 'Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”
Isaiah 6:1-5

Nor is there any Rock like our God."

Our response to His holiness

"'Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.'.... And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God." Exodus 3:5-6

"Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, 'What does my Lord say to His servant?' Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, 'Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.' And Joshua did so." Joshua 5:14-15

"Then Job answered the Lord and said: 'I know that You can do everything,
And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
Listen, please, and let me speak;
You said,  ‘I will question you, and you shall answer Me.’
I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.
Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”
Job 42:1-6

"Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth."
Psalm 96:9

"...give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works!
Glory in His holy name."
1 Chronicles 16:8-10

"Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come before Him.
Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth."

For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name."

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits."
Psalm 103:1-2

God calls us to share in His holiness

"And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."
Exodus 19:6

“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; but because the Lord loves you.... Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments; and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them."
Deuteronomy 7:6-10

Rebellion against His holiness

"In His love and in His pity He redeemed them;
And He bore them and carried them all the days of old.
But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit;
So He turned Himself against them as an enemy,
And He fought against them."
Isaiah 63:9-10

"Alas, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity,
A brood of evildoers, children who are corrupters!
They have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked to anger
The Holy One of Israel, they have turned away backward."
Isaiah 1:4

"I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. You shall fall on the open field; for I have spoken,' says the Lord God. “And I will send fire on Magog and on those who live in security in the coastlands. Then they shall know that I am the Lord. So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them profane My holy name anymore. Then the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. Surely it is coming, and it shall be done." Ezekiel 39:4

Human pride mocks His holiness

‘Whom have you reproached and blasphemed?
Against whom have you raised your voice, and lifted up your eyes on high?
Against the Holy One of Israel.
By your messengers you have reproached the Lord,
And said: 'By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains....
Did you not hear long ago how I made it, from ancient times that I formed it?...
But I know your dwelling place... and your rage against Me."
2 Kings 19:22-27

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses,
Who trust in chariots because they are many,
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!
Yet He also is wise and will bring disaster, and will not call back His words,
But will arise against the house of evildoers."
Isaiah 31:1-2

For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel:
'In returning and rest you shall be saved;
In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.'
But you would not,
And you said, 'No, for we will flee on horses'— Therefore you shall flee!
And, 'We will ride on swift horses'—

Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift!'" Isaiah 30:15-16

His holy judgment

"O Lord, You have appointed them for judgment;
O Rock, You have marked them for correction.
You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on wickedness."
Habakkuk 1:12

"Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel:
'Because you despise this word, and trust in oppression and perversity...
Therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall,
A bulge in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.
And He shall break it like the breaking of the potter’s vessel...
He shall not spare."
Isaiah 30:12-14

In that day a man will look to his Maker,
And his eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel.
He will not look to the altars, the work of his hands;
He will not respect what his fingers have made."
Isaiah 17:7-8

"I will take away from your midst those who rejoice in your pride,
And you shall no longer be haughty in My holy mountain.
I will leave in your midst a meek and humble people,
And they shall trust in the name of the Lord."

"And they shall call them The Holy People, the Redeemed of the Lord;" Isaiah 62:12

And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior."

Our prayers to Him

"Oh, send out Your light and Your truth!
Let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill."
Psalm 43:3

O God, You are my God; early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.
So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
Thus I will bless You while I live..."
Psalm 63:1-4
