 Passion

Warnings concerning the Passions of the flesh (human nature)

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.   And those who are Christ’s  have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."  Galatians 5:22-25

"Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,  in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them." Colossians 3:5-7

"For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit...." Romans 7:5-6

"...if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion." 1 Corinthians 7:8-9

"...each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles  who do not know God..." 1 Thessalonians 4:4

"...do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy.'”  1 Peter 1:14-16

"Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles  to abstain from the passions of the flesh,  which wage war against your soul.  Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers,  they may see your good deeds and glorify God...." 1 Peter 2:11-12

"...live for the rest of the time in the flesh  no longer for human passions but  for the will of God.  The time that is past  suffices  for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry."  1 Peter 4:2-3

“In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions. It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.  But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life." Jude 18-21

“...although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man....  Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts... who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator....
"For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. ...
"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things  which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness,  sexual immorality, wickedness,  covetousness... who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things rare deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them."
Romans 1:22-31

Some new translations use "passion" in positive ways, but notice the words used in standard translations:

KJV: "For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods..." Exodus 34:14
Ex 34:14). Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.

NKJV: "for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods..." Exodus 34:14

New Living Translation:  "You must worship no other gods, but only the Lord, for he is a God who is passionate about his relationship with you. Do not make treaties of any kind with the people living in the land. They are spiritual prostitutes, committing adultery against me by sacrificing to their gods. If you make peace with them, they will invite you to go with them to worship their gods, and you are likely to do it." Exodus 34:14-15

NKJ: "And his disciples remembered that it was written, 'The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.'" John 2:17

NKJV: "Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” John 2:17

New Living Translation: "Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: 'Passion for God’s house burns within me.'" John 2:17
